Split Friendly Match with Touring Team WEST MIDDLESEX B.Assoc. On Sunday 14th June
The West Middlesex Bowling Association is a group of players from all parts of London. Most years they go on a week tour, and this year have chosen the West Country. The Association presented a special pennant to the club, and our Captain was generously given a bottle of whiskey.
Split Friendly Match with Glasgow Presidents’ Tour. On Friday 17th July
The Glasgow Presidents have been playing at many of our local Clubs during their two week tour of our area. They are all Presidents or ex-presidents of Clubs in the Glasgow Association of Bowling Clubs - over ninety Clubs in total. The Glasgow President’s tour one area of the country each year, and this year we were fortunate that they chose North Somerset. The match was played with Men and Ladies on separate rinks. The result was close, with Ashcombe's men winning by just seven shots, whilst the ladies narrowly lost by just two shots.
The photos show some of the men who made up the tour side, the ladies unfortunately didn’t join the men for this photo session. John Main, who is pictured with the group (far right in close-up shot) is our Competition Secretary, and he acted as Captain on the day. The match was played with Men and Ladies on separate rinks.
Mixed Friendly Match with St. Columb Major - Their Day-Tour on Sunday 19th July
The Club like to arrange a day-tour; they choose a rough area, and apparently stick in a ‘pin’, and try to arrange a game of bowls in that location. This year the pin stuck firmly into Weston-super-Mare, and the Club chose the lovely location of Ashcombe Park for their visit. Unfortunately the weather was not so lovely, with heavy rain showers, but we managed to play 18 ends, in a close contest which St Columb Major won. The photos show Captains of both Clubs, announcing players in each rink.
St. Columb Major is a small town situated beside the A39 between Wadebridge and Newquay. The town has many fine buildings which indicate its historical importance as the cultural, administrative, and agricultural centre of the region. The town also has a bowling Club, which is about thirty years old, and it is where most of the touring team are members.
