Club Members may need to know some additional information, which is provided below:
Why is the Club introducing new Coloured shirts?
Many clubs have decided to introduce coloured clothing, as a way of modernising the game. Bowls England has promoted the wearing of coloured shirts, and provide these to their players. Several of our local Clubs are already wearing coloured shirts, whilst others have not yet taken the ‘plunge’. Ashcombe Park Bowling Club has decided to introduce coloured shirts, to be seen as a modern club, keen to attract new members.
Why are the shirts being introduced next year?
Next year is our Centenary year, and many special matches and events will take place. It seemed a good idea to introduce the new shirts for our Centenary, rather than leave it any longer. This would provide the impetus to get the idea into reality, otherwise the Club may just keep thinking about them. Additionally, some of our sponsors were keen to provide more financial support for the Centenary, and some of this support will be channelled into the purchase of shirts, so as to reduce the cost for Club Members.
What sponsorship deals have been agreed?
Although most of our sponsors will provide some additional funds for the Centenary, it must be remembered that these are difficult times financially, and we can only expect modest increases. Two sponsors will be contributing to the purchase of new shirts. “Thinking Opticians” will provide a substantial amount, on the understanding that the shirt contains their company logo; this will be embroidered onto the front of the shirt, on the left-hand side. “NK Sports” have agreed to supply the shirts at cost, waiving any profits, with the inclusion of their company name, embroidered in small letters onto one sleeve; the company has been integral in the design of the shirts, which are produced by Kaylo Prosport of Poole.
Who will receive a free shirt?
The first shirt is provided free of charge to all existing Members, excluding Social and Non-Playing Members. To qualify for a shirt you must have joined as a playing Member this year, 2010. If anyone doesn’t qualify, but has been a Member for several years prior to this, a free shirt will be given, provided that this person re-joins as a playing member at the start of the Centenary year.
Shirt Material
‘Sportex’ is the recommended material for our shirts; this is 100% polyester. This kind of material has been promoted by Bowls England for bowling shirts. It is very easy to wash, and requires little or no ironing. Colours tend to be more colour-fast and are much less likely to run or fade than with cotton-based shirts (these would otherwise need to be washed in low temperatures). The shirt also tends to keep its shape better. The ease of washing should mean that a clean shirt can always be ready to wear for a match, without needing to purchase a lot of shirts. ‘Sportex’ designed shirts contain small holes in parts of the material, which are designed to help cool the body on hotter days.
That apart, it is said by some bowlers that the shirt tends to make them sweat more, and they find them uncomfortable to wear. One result can be seen by the wearing of slightly over-sized shirts in an attempt to improve the comfort aspect. Most of our Members currently wear cotton or ‘poly-cotton’ shirts, and are very satisfied with them. Our new shirts can be supplied in these materials, at no additional cost. It is therefore up to each Member as to their own preference.
Ordering Your Shirts
During August and September, Members will be able to try on sample shirts at Club events and on ‘Umbrella’ nights. To assist further, a size-comparison chart is available by clicking the “Load Size Chart” button at the top of this page. The standard shirt will be supplied in ‘Sportex’ material, with short sleeves, but, Members will be able to opt for variants, such as long sleeves, and cotton or poly-cotton material.
Members need to place their order for shirts, giving size and any variants by the close of this season. And. also state whether their name should be included (additional £2 per shirt). It is very much hoped that Members will purchase at least one additional shirt, since it may be some time into next season before a second order can be considered. Please place your orders with Averill Goacher (for the Ladies), or Bob Kibble (for the Men).
It would be appreciated if payment is made at the time of ordering. This may be in cash, or cheque (made payable to “Ashcombe Park Bowling Club”). Don’t wait ‘till the end of the season, orders may be made at any time, so order now, to avoid the ‘last minute’ rush!
It is hoped that this page has clarified the situation, and answered questions that Members may be asking. The information provided is understood to be correct and accurate, but may require some amendment, particularly as further decisions are taken.
