All Matches are now played, and almost all have their Result provided, Friendly match rink details and comments are included on this page, but other reports are provided on other pages as appropriate. Stephen Ash and Barbara MacGregor provided reports to the local newspaper during the season.

This page provides a match summary, and Ashcombe Team players for all matches against Tourists and special teams that we played as part of our Centenary celebrations. All matches are played at Ashcombe Park except “The Royal Household”.

Ashcombe 95 : WATCHET 156 Mixed Joint-Centenary Friendly (Away: 23rd April)

Mixed Both Watchet and Ashcombe celebrate 100 years of bowling this year, and as both are Somerset Clubs, they decided to play each other, home and away. Ashcombe were well beaten, playing the fist match at Watchet, but it was the occasion that mattered more this time - and there will be the opportunity to reverse the outcome when Watchet play at Ashcombe towards the end of the season.

Ashcombe 100 : ROYAL HOUSEHOLD 145 Men’s Centenary Friendly (Away: 24th April)

ROYAL HOUSEHOLD WELCOME ASHCOMBE A warm welcome was afforded Ashcombe Bowling Club when we visited the Royal Household at their Club in Windsor Great park. The club is situated in an area known as Shaw Farm, and it is truly in an idyllic setting, with the weather staying very warm and sunny throughout the day. During the game we talked about each other's Clubs, and our Centenary year. Afterwards a tea was provided, and we were then shown items of historic interest, including the first woods that were bowled on their first opening day, back in 1920. A predominance of the members of the club either work or have been employed by the Royal Household, and many live on the estate. The day was somewhat spoilt by aircraft noise, but otherwise it was a very enjoyable experience, playing perfect hosts, on a near perfect green. And, for a Centenary match, how fitting it was for Ashcombe to score 100 shots albeit the Royal Household won the game by 45 shots.

Ashcombe 124 : SOMERSET PATRONS 98. Men’s Centenary Friendly (4 May).

It was considered a pleasure to invite the Somerset Patrons to play a friendly game at Ashcombe Park as one of the Club’s Centenary invitation matches. It was a very enjoyable occasion, followed by a tea.

Ashcombe 122 : BARBARIANS 106 Men’s Centenary Friendly (12 May)

As one of their Centenary Matches, Ashcombe were privileged to welcome The Barbarians. Played in fine weather, this special event was enjoyed both as a friendly game and a keen contest, with Ashcombe running out winners overall.

Seven rinks were provided for this match with the tourists winning on five; an enjoyable afternoon nevertheless. Another excellent game, this time with tourists from East Anglia. Ashcombe were winning 56-50 after 10 ends, but eastern ‘magic’ prevailed; the tourists eventually winning this friendly encounter. Ashcombe v QUEENS WORKS - Bedford: Ladies 31,34 Men 96,140 Touring Team. (2 June)

The ‘works’ were W H Allan, and they produced marine engines; famously producing the steam engines for the Titanic. The tourists ‘steam-rollered’ Ashcombe, leaving only Alan Yates rink as winners, and one of our youngest Members, Frazer Ham, playing in this rink, was given a blazer badge by the tourists.

Ashcombe 138 : BOWLS ENGLAND 97 Centenary Friendly (11 June)

To celebrate 100 years of bowling at Ashcombe Park, Bowls England were invited to come and play a Presidents' Celebration Match. The game was much enjoyed, and we thank members of Bowls England for travelling some distances to play the game, We were particularly honoured that Bowls England President Joan Balding came, and she played against Ashcombe President Roy Powell, in the 'top' rink.

It turned out to be a close contest, with Pegasus winning by just one shot. However, a moral victory for Ashcombe, winning 4 of the 6 rinks.

A lovely day for this lovely occasion. Ashcombe had only 3 winning rinks, but Alan Little’s team were worthy of a mention - after loosing 4 on the 15th, Alan’s rink stormed to victory, scoring 11 without reply, and winning by 6 shots.
