Rules of Play
All Play will be subject to the rules adopted by Bowls England, and variations of Somerset Bowls Association.
CUP MATCHES
The Cub will invariably select the strongest available team.
LEAGUE MATCHES
The Men’s ‘over sixties’ and Somerset League teams are selected for each match, from a pool of players. These will have been identified by the selection committee, prior to the start of the season.
Attendance
Members selected for a match arrive at least 15 minutes before the Home match starts, or 15 minutes prior to departure from Clubhouse for Away matches. Reserves, when selected, also arrive, ready to play in the match, unless previously cleared by the Captain of the day. If a Selected player does not arrive on time, then the Captain has the right to nominate a Reserve to play, and if the selected player subsequently turns up, then Reserve will still play.
This ensures that the Club is always able to field sufficient players for the game. Very occasionally, in friendly matches, additional rinks are put in at short notice. The allocation of reserves makes it easier for the Club to field the additional players required.
Match Availability
If a Member is selected to play, then a tick is placed in the box alongside name on the Match Availability form to confirm selection. If a Member is selected, but subsequently finds that he or she is not able to play, then, do not write anything on the form, but tell the Captain or Vice-Captain that you are unable to play. A substitute can then be arranged as soon as possible.
Club Members should make themselves available for a minimum of 12 matches. The Selection Committee maintain a chart of Members availability, selection, etc., and publish this at regular intervals.
Match Stoppages
Games will be played whenever possible. Matches can be stopped by mutual agreement of both Captains, possibly after an appeal from players. Such reasons for stoppage include conditions of the weather, rain, cold, or wind, and bad light (evening matches). The scores will be submitted at the point of stoppage. For league and cup games, the match may be resumed with the scores as they were when the game was stopped, or the match replayed.
The listed Matches have been combined from the Men’s and Ladies’ Sections, and are provided on a monthly basis. Any amendments will be indicated in bold text, and additions are indicated under ‘Notes and Comments’. As matches are played, the Result information is provided, soon after being posted in the Club-room, together with any associated details.
‘UMBRELLA’ Matches. Our Club (in common with other Bowling Clubs) play ‘Umbrellas’, which are friendly Club matches where teams of players (triples and/or fours) are selected purely at random, by drawing a ‘tag’. The ‘tag’ provides your team (red or blue), and the rink where you will be playing. The winners are the team which record the highest winning shot margin. ‘Umbrellas’ are played on Monday evening (Men), Friday evening (Ladies & Men - Mixed), and there is a ‘Ladies Afternoon’ on Monday which follows a similar ‘Umbrella’ format.
