For the last nine years, Audrey Kearns, a valued Club Member, has kindly undertaken to arrange a winter break for four nights at the Manor House Hotel near Okehampton. This year’s trip was again much enjoyed by all!
The Manor Hose Hotel provides an extensive range of sport, craft and leisure facilities. Most activities cater for beginners, providing good basic instruction, and there are competitions for the more experienced enthusiasts. Of course, one of the more attractive amenities is bowling, where there are two, four rink, indoor bowling greens.
The range of indoor activities provides something for everyone; from tennis and badminton, to 10-pin bowling and archery. We all found something to enjoy, as well as giving us opportunity to try something we may not have done before.
The craft centre offered us the opportunity to have a go at many different crafts that we may never have the opportunity of trying. Pottery, glass engraving, silk painting, enamelling and much more was available, all with full tuition.
One main advantage is that many of the facilities are provided ‘free of charge’; charges only being made for those with a high level of consumables such as some of the craft activities, and then only at a nominal charge.
The dining room provided good food, with magnificent views over Dartmoor, made all the better this year by the snow. Breakfast and Lunch are self-service, with waiter-service for dinner, and we got two bottles of complementary wine during our stay.
The holiday provided plenty of time for us to enjoy ourselves, and ‘chat’ to fellow Club Members, in a relaxed atmosphere.
Most of the pictures were taken during an evening session of ‘curling’. The pictures above show the ten-pin bowling group - having a hilarious time. The winter scenes show how beautiful the scenery was, but unfortunately, many of the planned walks had to be cancelled.
